Successful Weight Loss is Not About the Food

Monday, December 28th, 2009

When I first began learning EFT, I had a hard time with tapping on the negative part of the sentences. For so many years, I’ve been saying “Acknowledge but don’t focus” and here, we’re saying something negative and tapping on it?? To me, that was like tapping the negative INTO myself and I had SO much resistance.

What I have found since then though is that the reason we say the negative is to acknowledge and accept where we are. For instance, if someone says, “Even though I constantly self-sabotage…” that’s just saying what we’ve done previously… up to now… then we switch to “…. I choose to stay focused on the results and support myself completely”. That changes the energy via our words AND the tapping.

What we’re saying is I know what I need to work on; I acknowledge and accept I do this and, now, I’m changing it. Make sense?

It’s as though I’m in Connecticut and I want to go to Nevada. Well, if I don’t know, acknowledge and accept where I am, how can I get where I want to go? If I “wish” I were somewhere else, it’s not going to help. Saying I “wish” I were in California and I want to go to Nevada, then I’d be traveling east yet, I’m REALLY in Ct. and if I travel east, I’m I’ll end up in the ocean rather than Nevada, correct? So! First step ~ Acknowledge and accept where you are now to get you where you want to go.

I understand many have an issue with the word “accept”, as well. They think if they accept something, that means they don’t/wont change it. One definition of accept is “…to regard as true..”. So, all we’re doing is saying “this is true ~ now”. It doesn’t mean it will always be true. Some examples of this would be: “currently I am 100 pounds more than MY ideal weight…”; “currently, I have a tendency to sabotage my successes…”; “currently, I’m in a less than ideal relationship…”. That’s it! Currently! It doesn’t mean you can’t, wont or are unwilling to change. It’s just a place to start.

I’ve also found many have a problem tapping on the positive… “I totally and completely love and accept myself.” There’s a little voice inside that says… “.. no you don’t…” which is why so many of us self-sabotage and cannot be the weight we’d like to be, have the health we’d like to have or the other successes. We feel we don’t deserve.

One of the high points for one of my students was when she stopped reaching for the ice cream whenever she was stressed because she chose that ending (or something similar) whenever she tapped. She came to class and she was astounded at her success saying she’d NEVER felt love for herself until she tapped on that for a week.

What’s interesting too is how so many wont do the tapping. They’re resistant and will say things like “this is silly”; “this wont work, etc.” which is fine. EFT doesn’t need to be believed to “work” or make a difference. All I say is, do it and find out for yourself.

I even have a couple of students who call themselves “shower tappers”. They’ll do it in the shower yet feel silly doing it in front of anyone. Others tap anytime, anyplace, especially when they’re feeling unhealthy (for them) cravings coming up or anxiety coming up which leads to self-sabotage.

A quick definition of Emotional Freedom Technique or, EFT is a simple, direct approach to release and redirect blocked energy patterns in the body/mind. Some call it acupuncture without needles.

Founder Gary Craig explains it thusly: In essence, EFT is an emotional version of acupuncture wherein we stimulate certain meridian points by tapping on them with our fingertips. This addresses a new cause for emotional issues (unbalanced energy meridians). Properly done, this frequently reduces the therapeutic process from months or years down to hours or minutes. And, since emotional stress can contribute to pain, disease and physical ailments, we often find that EFT provides astonishing physical relief.

What’s great about it is, once you learn it, you can tap on anything to resolve numerous issues which is why on my “Tap Into Your Ideal Weight” page, I tell you you’ll be able to keep and use the tools I’ll be teaching during the live, interactive teleclass. EFT is only ONE of the tools I’ll be sharing.

For those who are interested in eliminating excess weight and the habits, cravings and emotional eating patterns that constantly sabotage diet and weight loss endeavors, my “Tap Into Your Ideal Weight” teleclass series begins Tuesday, Jan. 12, 5 p.m. Pacific; 8 p.m. Eastern. As I work individually with each person throughout the program, space is limited AND you’ll save $50 if you register before Jan. 1, 2010 (if seating lasts that long). Let this be the last year you put “go on a diet” as one of your new year’s resolutions!

WooHooo! Down 2#’s in 3 Days!!!!

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Ever get to that point where the scale just WONT move??? How frustrating is that? For tappers, here ya go ~ “Even though I’m often frustrated when looking at the scale, I choose to remain focused on my outcome”.

Today, I got on the scale FULLY clothed and it was down to below where I was totally nekkid!!! YAHOOOOO!!

Really been getting some great awarenesses while out walking, in the shower.

Last night in class, one of the women said “It’s harder to lose weight when you get older”.

That’s what I’ve found. I’ve gained before yet, eliminated SO easily by just moving more which gave me the awareness that I want to eat better. Now, one thing I’ve found is that many people use the fact that they ARE moving (i.e. exercising) as an EXCUSE to eat/drink more.

When I use to go the a bodybuilding gym, one morning I heard a few of the members talking about going out drinking that night. I said, “wait! You come here, workout, then ruin all the benefits by going out drinking?” I was told that’s WHY they train ~ so they can drink and eat anything they want. Umm, o.k. Doesn’t work for me yet, not my body.

Now, the other women in the group told me that they were chubby as children so for them, it’s doubly hard yet, they’re eliminating as well as others in the group who’ve gotten heavy as they got older.

In my case, it was after getting married. (So, the thing here is don’t get married. *wink*)
No, really. What happened was, I wanted to snuggle in bed with him rather than get out and MOVE as I did before we got married; we went out and ate (and overate) a LOT AND, started businesses so, spent a LOT of time in front of the computer. At night, we tended to snuggle while watching videos OR, go out and eat more!

We got in the habit of eating, not for hunger, yet because we were together….

The reason I started doing the “Tap Into Your Ideal Weight” program is because I now KNOW how hard it is to eliminate weight; break the habits we’ve created to comfort or reward ourselves; acknowledge and eliminate the fears we have of who we’ll be when we eliminate the excess weight; feel confident in ourselves when we’re out socially so that we can enjoy interaction with others while maintaining a conscious food program without guilt, without frustration, without all the other emotions we’ve wrapped around food. Exciting, isn’t it???

Here’s one more thing ~ I know it seems a long time to wait ~ and many will not ever have to wait as long (actually, wait isn’t the correct word as I was not in a “holding pattern” waiting for this to happen) as I to find something you are TRULY passionate about yet, since I found and founded this program, I have to say, it’s something I am TRULY passionate about and SO excited! I live it! I think about it constantly. How can I improve it? How can I share it? Who can I share it with? How important is this to just one person’s health?

Enough for now ~

Changing up … for Today

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

Yesterday, got up about 4:45 and was out the door by 5 a.m. Had done 8,759 steps by 7:12 so, IF my focus was on 10,000 steps, wouldn’t take much more. Didn’t go out walking again yet, what I did at home brought me to 10,455. Shows me I don’t sit as much as I sometimes think I do.

This morning, thought I’d change up. Fitness is not just about cardio. It’s about strength, balance, flexibility as well. I’ve got all the dvd’s yet, one of my favorites is Turbo Jam. Went down to the sun-room, put on Turbo Sculpt. Never did that one. It’s really good! I was looking for a great leg workout and that’s it! Funny, with all the weights and toys I have, I don’t have free weights anymore. I could use my Indian clubs but, a bit awkward. Going to use them next time since I now know the program. Even without, really good legs!

Results of the first week of my “Tap Into Your Ideal Weight” live and local program!!! A few of the women emailed me, said they didn’t do all the home-play, blah, blah, blah, so I sent an email out telling them I’m not their mommy and they’re not bad and not going to be punished ~ so one thing we worked on is “guilt”. I’ve been doing this work long enough to know that, when working with the mental/emotional, that ol’ monkey mind is NOT feeling safe and will be chattering in the ear giving ANY reason to not continue. It really likes people to stay JUST the way they are, even if it kills them (and, obesity can kill you).

So, EVERYone showed and thanked me for the email. Many said it took the burden off. They were feeling guilty. One did say, she was tapping on “loving and honoring myself completely”… and said she’d messed up on her food program yet, no beating herself up as she would have done normally. That’s a HUGE biggie for her! More about her in a bit.

A few women said they’d eliminated 4-5 pounds!!! (Funny how THEY are the ones most skeptical still). Many said that there were times they would normally eat yet, just didn’t feel to. They were more aware of what was going into their mouths, when and why.

A few said it wasn’t the tapping, but other things we worked on ~ which is fine. Whatever works. lol Personally, I KNOW the tapping enhances and breaks/eliminates the blockages in the system to where we CAN have the awarenesses.

These classes were SO much different than last week’s. Last week you’da thought I had
shanghaied them and forced them to be there instead of them voluntarily coming and PAYING!

This week the energy was SO much higher, the participation SO much better. Last week, couldn’t even hear what they were saying; this week they WANTED to talk about results! How cool is that?

Oh, the woman I mentioned earlier wanted to work on stress. Now, understand, there are more aspects than just one. We could tap on “stress” in general yet, we found what else she did when she was stressed. First off, her main thing is, when she’s stressed, she eats a full carton of ice cream. This week, she had a MAJOR situation come up and, instead of ice cream, she went for brown rice. O.k., big step and, SHOPPING! What she did was exchange one addiction for another so, we tapped on and examined alternatives including remaining “calm and serene”. I also gave her some home-play to do for stressful situations.

Other things we worked on were “food as rewards”, frustration, anxiety and more. It was a full 90 minutes of tapping, focus and laughter.

Lowest price ever is still good for the teleclasses beginning the first week of Sept. There’s a Tue. evening class as well as a Wed. a.m. teleclass. If you’re Pasadena, Ca. local, might consider coming to that class being held on Wed. evenings. Now, do this ONLY if you’ve been frustrated at being on the “lost weight/found weight” roller coaster or, TRYING to stay on a food program through willpower. I can tell you, if you are an emotional eater… it’s tough to do it that way! Your body/mind (lil monkey inside) is not use to not having those “comfort foods” and will feel deprived when it thinks it “can’t” have. It’s always better to be able to say “no, I really don’t want that right now” and really know it’s true!

Injoy,

Fear… what is it good for?

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Yesterday I had a very interesting session with one of my clients.

She’s been with me for about 14 years and one of the smartest women I know.

When she came in, I could feel her energy was depleted and, she was speaking in what I call a Greta Garbo voice ~ deep, full of phlem/mucus and raspy.

I asked how long that had been going on and she told me about 2 1/2 weeks.

During our session, I decided to probe a bit deeper and after awhile she mentioned that her boss was considering closing the doors to his shop because his business was slow and the boiler was shot. My client suggested that she’d loan him the money to get it fixed so he could keep his doors open.

I found this whole exchange interesting. The man has a thriving business next door and his personal business at the other shop was slow because he’d been ill and a large number of his clients had gone to others in his shop so, they were still there. He just needed to rebuild.

During our session, I had my client do some sentence completions. She did one and a few minutes after, burst into a loud wail and then into tears. She said she was scared he was going to close his doors and she’d be out of work; she was scared because the majority of HER clients were coming in complaining about “the economy” and she realized at that moment that she was scared too and hadn’t acknowledge it and it was weighing on her.

She also had been talking with another mother and agreed to do something she didn’t want to do, so, we did some work around that.

She also acknowledged that she’d not been taking care of herself because clients wanted to book her on her days off and because of her fears, she took them thereby depleting her own energy and taking time away from her own “me” time.

We talked about her telling that mom that she didn’t want to volunteer and we talked about how she could take care of these other clients without sacrificing herself.

Then, I suggested she listen to her voice. All the raspyness was gone, her energy was raised and her color was back. It was like she was a whole new person than the one who came in and all it took was recognizing her fears.

In my playbook, I suggest people do some daily fear work. Not to focus on fear, but to just acknowledge what’s underlying in the murky depths of our subconscious. If we don’t acknowledge it, we can make ourselves ill or sabatoge a good relationship or kill our jobs.

My client acknowledged she had fears about saying no to this woman AND, she acknowledged she had fears about losing her job, losing her clients, etc. The reality of the latter situation is, she’s always made more money in the job than anyone else and still is. She went in one day when she only had one person booked and stated “I’m going to make some money today!” She did!

Bottom line ~ look inside and say ~ “One thing I’m afraid of is…..” then, finish the sentence with 6-10 different endings. See what comes up.

I’ve had students tell me they were fearless. Everyone they knew told them they were fearless. They have since found, they weren’t. Why is that good? Because unless you recognize what you are feeling, you’re not fully alive and experiencing everything the world has to offer. You hide in your fear ~ especially when unacknowledged.

Upper Limits

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

One thing I’ve been noticing recently is that people are really not aware that they have upper (and lower) limits for living. What does that mean?

One way we could put it is, we all have what we call a comfort level. When we step beyond that comfort level, we become anxious and pull back.

I call it an upper limits question. A few examples:

Been sick with one thing or another for years. Use to having people respond a certain way; attract a lot of caretakers; aren’t responsible for certain things due to the illness and then choose to do what’s necessary to heal. Now, everyone around has to change. The person who is ill is healing, what happens to their role? Either they have to change or leave. The ill person, has to get use to who s/he is now (who would you be if you weren’t ill?), get use to not being so cared for, start taking responsibility for themselves more, etc. That will bring anxiety and fear.

Another example is one who is eliminating excess fat. Same thing. As they start transforming, the people around them get anxious and pass that anxiety to them. They start hearing how they are losing “too fast”, looking “skinny”, not eating enough, having food put in front of then and being told “one bite wont hurt you”, etc. In their own heads, they’re having to deal with their own emotions ~ the ones they kept suppressed by overeating. Tough to bear, don’t you think? Well, that’s why we coaches are around to help people through these times.

How about someone who leaves a corporate position to become an entrepreneur? Think they don’t have fear? Someone who comes into a lot of money and is afraid to spend it OR spends it all so they can feel comfortable again.

IF we truly want to truly live and truly be alive, we have to make changes in our lives. We could just go through our mundane lives, going to our mundane jobs, coming home to our mundane families, watching mundane t.v. shows, going to bed then doing it again in the a.m. and on weekends, sitting home watching our mundane football games with chips and beer (now that’s REALLY living!) or, the women hanging out with the girls, going shopping, eating bad food, etc., or, we could do what it takes to make our lives fantastically exciting by eliminating excess weight, making ourselves healthy by doing what THAT takes even if others don’t agree; leaving our boring mundane jobs.. taking chances!

At the end of our lives, do we want to say ~ “I LIVED”! Or, “I wish I had lived”?

Remember we are often reflections of other peoples’ fear. Look at their lives. Is that how YOU want to live?
Until next time,

Yours in health,

“You Turn”, a book by Dr. Nancy Irwin

Monday, September 29th, 2008

We’re back from a wonder-filled weekend in Sedona at the Raw Spirit Festival. I’ve started a campaign to speak at the next one in Santa Barbara in June. Many have already emailed the general manager, Theresa Lucek, and said they’d like to see me onstage which was very kind of them to take the time to do so.

Here’s something that I read in a book by an author I’m going to be interviewing next week.

“Anxiety is an attempt to fight future danger or control the uncontrollable, (borrowing pain from the future.) Depression (hanging on to pain from the past) is an attempt to flee danger by retreating into our own private cave through isolation, or numbing our emotions through drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, gambling, sex, shopping, you name it.” Dr. Nancy Irwin

I’ll name overeating.

I’m really enjoying this book. I’ve been highlighting numerous sentences starting with the introduction. Anything I didn’t know already? Not really yet, like any “self-help” style book, very often there’s an “aHA!” moment because of the way something is said or the because of the time it’s said.

This book contains 40 stories of life-changing events from people over 40. I actually only heard of/actually know a few people in this book along with “Jane Doe”, “John Doe” and “Anonymous” (yes, they are in the book and for good reason as you’ll find out reading these very honest, revealing, stories). If you enjoy hearing personal stories of change and triumph as I do, this is the book for you.

Obviously, this will be another interesting interview on Celebrating Your Potential. Remember to check it out next week.

Please feel free to comment below.

Until next week ~

Enjoy life!
